“Don’t believe the statistics!” says Cherelle Ying, who at 25 is working at the Criminal Records Bureau after completion of her degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. “I was brought up in the inner city and I was the first to go to university in my family. I wasn’t aware of the process or what you had to do so I had to gain all my knowledge myself. I want to let people from my community know what’s available for them and that having an inner city upbringing does not mean you can’t be successful.”
Cherelle’s leading on a health and wellbeing in the community project and she’s always mentored and led younger people. “Being a good leader is really important to me. The project’s really improved my empathy and my active listening skills. I just think it’s really important to pass on knowledge and there should be more emphasis on encouraging young people to be ambitious leaders.”
